Serum Lipid Profile status of Type 2 Diabetic Patients in the cross section population in Dhaka City of Bangladesh

Abstract: Objectives: Serum lipid profile viz the level of total cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol of type2 diabetic patients have been studied and compares them with levels of control subjects. Results: The mean value of the TG level for male diabetics was higher than that for the female diabetics and the mean values of TC, HDL-C and LDL-C were not found significantly different between male and female diabetics. Hyperlipidemia has a documented causative relation with CAD, but the … Show more

“…In our study we found the diabetic patients have a significant elevation in the means of the serum levels of LDL cholesterol when compared to the control group, this result agrees with that reported by M, G Bhutto [10] in a study done in India, who found the mean of the serum levels of LDLc was significantly elevation in diabetic patients than in the control subjects. The current study shows a significant elevation of the mean of the serum levels of triglycerides among the Open Journal of Blood Diseases diabetic patients when compared to the control group, this agrees with a study done by Sarkar Chandra Bidan [11], who found the mean of the serum levels of triglycerides of the test group was significantly raised when compared with the control group. In our study the diabetic patients have a significant reduction in the means of the serum levels of chromium when compared to the control group, this result agrees with that reported by Rajendran Kannan et al [12], who found the mean of the serum levels of chromium was significantly lower in diabetic patients than in the control subjects, this is in coordination with the findings of Morris et al [13], Ekmekcioglu et al [14], and Kazi et al [15] that indicated lower blood levels of chromium in diabetics than in nondiabetics.…”

“…In this study 76.7% had hypertriglyceridemia which is higher than the study by Udawat et al where hypertriglyceridemia was observed in 54.5% cases 8 . Similarly Sarkar et al in 2009 in Dhaka, Bangladesh showed the hypertriglyceridemia in 58% type 2 diabetic patients 9 . But this study matched with the study in Pakistan in 2011 which showed hypertriglyceridemia in 78% cases 10 .…”

“…in 2005 showed in their study hypercholesterolemia in 48% patients and our study 47.3% type 2 diabetic patient had hypercholesterolemia. Similarly, Sarkar et al9 , in 2009 in Dhaka, Bangladesh found hypercholesterolemia in 41% type 2 diabetic patients. Haq AU 1 , in 2006 in Peshawar showed in their study that serum cholesterol was above the normal value in 60% of the subjects in the obese group and it was more than normal in 56% of the subjects in the non-obese group. This difference in cholesterol level may be due to fact that it depends on other factors like dietary habit, weight, sex, age and others.…”
