Sexual behavior and drug consumption among young adults in a shantytown in Lima, Peru

Abstract: Background: Risky sexual behaviors of young adults have received increasing attention during the last decades. However, few studies have focused on the sexual behavior of young adults in shantytowns of Latin America. Specifically, studies on the association between sexual behaviors and other risk factors for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and HIV/AIDS transmission, such as the consumption of illicit drugs or alcohol are scarce in this specific context.

“…Participants' age, sex and religiosity may also have an impact on condom use intention and behaviour (Ajzen & Manstead, 2007). Condom use inconsistency or non-use was associated with older college students (Adefuye, Abiona, Balogun, & LukoboDurrel, 2009) and men (Galvez-Buccollini, Delea, Herrera, Gilman, & Paz-Soldan, 2009;Shearer, Hosterman, Gillen, & Lefkowitz, 2005). A more positive attitude towards condoms is associated with greater religiosity (McCree, Wingood, DiClemente, Davies, & Harrington, 2003).…”

“…The relationship between patterns of using contraceptive methods and the consumption of alcohol and other drugs of abuse has been studied previously from different perspectives and using different methodologies, finding enhanced sexual risk behaviours among drug exposed populations [28,29] but underlining the limitations and the complexity of these relationships. In our population we found significantly lower percentage of hormonal contraception use, for women exposed to cannabinoids only compared with non-exposed women (Table 3).…”

“…For this reason, risky sexual behaviors of young adults have received increasing attention during the last decade (Gálvez-Buccollini, DeLea, Herrera, Gilman, & Paz-Soldan, 2009). Several studies on these factors have been conducted in the population of young people in Chile (González et al, 2013a(González et al, , 2013bHuitrón-Bravo et al, 2011;Sanchez et al, 2010) and in other Latin American countries (Ferre, Gerstenbluth, Rossi, & Triunfo, 2011;Gonçalves et al, 2008;Hugo et al, 2011;Ruiz-Canela et al, 2012).…”
