Short- and medium-term coastal abrasion and accretion rate analysis using GIS in Karawang, West Java

Abstract: A GIS-based study using MapInfo software has been performed to examine the short- and medium-term effect of coastal erosion in Karawang, West Java. Assessment of short-term period shows different trends in the consecutive of nine-year data. The balanced trend was found in the first period when abrasion and accretion have the same rate of 12 ha/yr. In second period accretion has dominated by causing emerging land around 27 ha/yr, but erosion only displaced 2 ha/yr of coastal area. In the third period more abras… Show more

“…The calculation of shoreline changes in Maruni Village uses the DSAS application with the Net Shoreline Movement (NSM) method which measures the distance of shoreline changes based on a transect that intersects 2 coastlines. Fauzie observed changes in two coastlines in 1998 and 2015 and found the abrasion rate in the Karawang Regency area of 15ha/year [2]. Maruni Beach since 1995 -2021 has experienced an abrasion distance of -49.80 m and an accretion of 7.11 m. End Point Rate (EPR) method which calculates the rate of shoreline change by dividing the distance between the shoreline by the time.…”

“…Moreover, it is very worrying in some places [8]. The previous studies of coastal dynamics in the area commonly discussed the interactive working among hydro-oceanographic processes and coastline zone characteristics [9][10][11][12] without any influencing effect of offshore-onshore curtain sediment and coastal infrastructures. Hence, the objective of this paper is to explain the phenomenon of short-term coastal dynamics on the Karawang coastline zone from the point of view of coupled natural resilience process and the hydrodynamic effect of coastal infrastructures.…”
