Time series of soluble extracellular polymeric substance (S-EPS) and transparent exopolymer particle (TEP) fractions, as well as biological, physical and chemical parameters, were studied in natural phytoplankton assemblages at 2 macrotidal sites located in the English Channel for 3 yr. The first site, the Bay des Veys (BDV), is sheltered from prevailing winds and influenced by a high river discharge, whereas the second, Lingreville-sur Mer (LGV), is exposed to the open ocean and to dominant winds. At both sites, the highest TEP concentrations were measured in spring and summer (1735 and 3604 µg equiv X l -1 at BDV and LGV, respectively) and were correlated with phytoplankton biomass and nitrogen concentrations. During the autumn and winter, TEP dynamics were not related to phytoplankton dynamics but appeared controlled by hydrodynamics. In contrast to TEP concentrations, S-EPS did not present any seasonal dynamics and was not correlated with TEP variations. The highest amount of S-EPS was recorded in spring at LGV (25.8 mg equiv. glucose l ). The S-EPS pool was separated in 2 fractions according to the molecular weight: low (LW) and high (HW). The LW fraction was produced in higher quantity than the HW fraction, and with larger temporal fluctuations. Therefore, both S-EPS fractions seem controlled by different environmental parameters depending on the season and on the studied ecosystem. The different dynamics observed for TEP and S-EPS confirm the complexity of carbon excretion processes in phytoplankton, and the results reveal different metabolic pathways and different origins for these carbon excretions. Abstract. An approach to assess estuarine environmental flow based on phytoplankton preference, including the complex relationships between hydrological modifications and ecosystem biomass, was developed in this study. We initially established a relationship between biomass requirements for primary and higher nutritional level organisms based on the ecosystem nutritional energy flow principles. Subsequently, diagnostic pigments were employed to represent phytoplankton community biomass, which indicated competition between two groups of phytoplankton in the biochemistry process. Considering empirical relationships between diagnostic pigments and critical environmental factors, biomass responses to river discharge were established by simulating distributions of critical environmental factors under action of river discharges and tide currents. Consequently, environmental flows were recommended for different fish biomass requirements. We used the Yellow River estuary as a case study; and May and June were identified as critical months for maintaining environmental flow. Temporal variation in natural river flow dynamics, which was used as a proxy for environmental flow, should be carefully examined in artificial hydrological regulation strategies, particularly during highamplitude flood pulses, which might result in negative effects on phytoplankton groups, and subsequently higher aquatic species biomass.

Abstract. Short term changes in zooplankton community were investigated at a fixed station in offshore waters of the Ligurian Sea (DYNAPROC 2 cruise, September-October 2004). Mesozooplankton were sampled with vertical WP-II hauls (200 µm mesh-size) and large mesozooplankton, macrozooplankton and micronekton with a BIONESS multinet sampler (500 µm mesh-size). Temporal variations of total biomass, species composition and abundance of major taxa were studied. Intrusions of low salinity water masses were observed two times during the cruise. The first one, which was the most intense, was associated with changes in zooplankton community composition. Among copepods, the abundance of Calocalanus, Euchaeta, Heterorhabdus, Mesocalanus, Nannocalanus, Neocalanus, Pleuromamma and also calanoid copepodites increased markedly. Among noncopepod taxa, only small ostracods abundance increased. After this low salinity event, abundance of all taxa nearly returned to their initial values. The influence of salinity on each zooplankton taxon was confirmed by a statistical analysis (Perry's method). The Shannon diversity index, Pielou evenness and species richness were used to describe temporal variations of large copepod (>500 µm) diversity. The Shannon index and Pielou evenness decreased at the beginning of the low salinity water intrusions, but not species richness. We suggest that low salinity water masses contained its own zooplankton community and passed through the sampling area, thus causing a replacement of the zooplankton population.
