“…The importance of contextualising RE within religious life is elided with a requirement to hold a religious belief; different disciplinary approaches in the study of religion represented by theology and religious studies are conflated with hierarchies of meaning that are reductive of religious life per se and socio-cultural contexts and national boundaries polarised in a broad sweep of the history of the Western world. This propensity for elision, conflation and polarisation jeopardises the coherence of the book as a whole, when significant claims that RE in any society will be a bellwether for the whole process of education and its life and traditions (Copley 2007) or that it is possible to achieve agreement on aims at the level of practice (Cush 2007) are summarily dismissed.
