Silver/hydroxyapatite composite coatings on porous titanium surfaces by sol‐gel method

Abstract: Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings loaded with nanosilver particles is an attractive method to impart the HA coating with antibacterial properties. Producing Ag/HA coatings on porous Ti substrates have been an arduous job since commonly used line-of-sight techniques are not able to deposit uniform coatings on the inner pore surfaces of the porous Ti. In this study, porous Ti scaffolds with high porosity and interconnected structures were prepared by polymer impregnating method. A sol-gel process was used to produce … Show more

“…The antibiotic-containing CaPO 4 deposits were found to exhibit significant in vivo improvement in preventing infection compared with the standard ones [934,943,944]. Similar effect was found for Ag-doped deposits [701][702][703][704][705][706][707][708]. These delivery methods of bioactive molecules extend the functions of CaPO 4 deposits to enhance new bone formation on orthopedic implants.…”

“…For example, let us consider deposition of CaPO 4 doped by various metals. Ag-doped CaPO 4 were put down using sol-gel [701,702] and electrophoretic [703] deposition, magnetron sputtering [704,705], thermal [706], plasma [707] and cold [708] spraying, IBAD [709], PLD [710] and thermal substrate [711] techniques, while CaPO 4 doped with Sr [437,712], Zn [713] and Si [437,714] were deposited using a biomimetic technique. …”

“…Pathogens found at infected oral implant sites, including S. mutans 90) , S. aureus 93,94) , S. oralis 43) , P. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans 84) were killed or significantly reduced upon contact with silver-implanted surfaces. All tested silver surfaces, such as hydroxyapatite (HA)-silver-surfaces 42,44,[46][47][48][49][50][51]91,161) or plasma sprayed silver-implanted HA 45,95) shared good antimicrobial activity.…”

“…To a different category of application belongs the coating of porous titanium surfaces of titanium implants (Podbielska and Ulatowska-Jarza 2005). These titanium materials can be coated by silver/hydroxyapatite composite layers by using the sol-gel method (Qu et al 2011). In that case, the aim of the antimicrobial effect of the coating is the protection of the patient against hazardous germs.…”
