Simple and rapid field tests for brucellosis in livestock

Abstract: 13 14Four simple and rapid field tests for the serodiagnosis of brucellosis in cattle, goat, 15 sheep and swine were developed. The performance of the assays was investigated using 16 serum samples collected in Portugal from animals originating from herds with a defined 17 sanitary status with respect to the presence of brucellosis. The sensitivity calculated for the 18 bovine, caprine, ovine and swine Brucella lateral flow assays based on results obtained for 19 samples collected from animals with culture con… Show more

“…The (ICA) is easy and rapid to be done and it has several advantages that allow testing in the management of large numbers of serum samples without specialized training, expertise, electricity and nor expensive equipment and it used in the animals from developing countries and other migratory populations [19] [20]. Also these devices can storage without the need for cooling and the test results are obtained almost immediately and visual inspection with the naked eye [19].…”

“…Also these devices can storage without the need for cooling and the test results are obtained almost immediately and visual inspection with the naked eye [19]. Many scientific studies by Smits et al [21]; Dey et al [22] refer to that ICA is accurate as compared with the standard microscopic agglutination test (MAT) also the sensitivity and specificity of LAT are 88% and 98%, respectively [23].…”

“…The LFA has several practical advantages which include the fact that the use of the LFA does not require specific training, expertise, electricity or expensive equipment, and the test devices may be stored without the need for refrigeration. The test results are obtained almost instantaneously and by visual inspection with the unaided eye (Abdoel et al, 2008). The test has been compared to Competitive ELISA (cELISA), and was reported to be even more sensitive and specific than cELISA (Bronsvoort et al, 2009).…”
