Simplified Building Models Extraction From Ultra-Light Uav Imagery

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Generating detailed simplified building models such as the ones present on Google Earth is often a difficult and lengthy manual task, requiring advanced CAD software and a combination of ground imagery, LIDAR data and blueprints. Nowadays, UAVs such as the AscTec Falcon 8 have reached the maturity to offer an affordable, fast and easy way to capture large amounts of oblique images covering all parts of a building. In this paper we present a state-of-the-art photogrammetry and visual reconstruction pip… Show more

“…For georeferencing, five ground control points were measured with a Leica GPS1200 GNSS receiver operating at RTK (real time kinematic) processing mode with accuracies of about 2 to 3 cm. The photogrammetry software Agisoft Photoscan was used to process the images into an orthophoto mosaic and DSM using a structure from motion approach (Snavely et al, 2007;Küng et al, 2011). Resulting products possess a resolution of a few millimetres.…”

“…Images were recorded at a pitch angle of 10º off-nadir to increase point visibility along sub-vertical surfaces and increase precision of final models within the high-relief topography (Nesbit and Hugenholtz, 2019). Images were processed using Pix4Dmapper v4.3 following a similar workflow described by previous authors (Küng et al, 2012;Nesbit et al, 2018). Following initial processing, the model was divided into four quadrants and processed into a dense point cloud and 3D textured mesh.…”

“…The pursuit of higher ground pixel resolution in the centimeter range leads to bring the carrier closer to the target, utilizing smaller electrically powered carriers. One or more circular/linear flight paths over a distinctive object are often shown, followed by computer-based modeling of this object (Küng et al, 2011;Li & Li, 2011;Wenzel et al, 2013). Flight times of 15 to 30 minutes are common until the need for touch down.…”
