Simulated Video Consultations as a Learning Tool in Undergraduate Nursing: Students’ Perceptions

Abstract: Simulated video consultations, a teaching tool based on high-fidelity simulations, were implemented in response to the necessary adaptation of high-fidelity clinical simulation sessions to the online or virtual modality during the university closure due to the COVID-19 confinement. The purpose of our study was to explore the undergraduate nursing students’ satisfaction and perceptions about simulated video consultations using the high-fidelity simulation methodology. A mixed-method was utilized with 93 undergr… Show more

“…A high-fidelity clinical simulation scenario depicting a potential case of GBV during COVID-19 confinement was performed in the form of a simulated video consultation. This methodology is considered as one more online high-fidelity simulation teaching option [ 42 , 43 ]. Therefore, it was carried out using a virtual platform for online video conferences provided by the university, namely Blackboard Collaborate LauncherTM.…”

“…Therefore, we believe that it is important to teach and train nursing students on GBV using high-fidelity clinical simulations in the shape of video consultations, especially in situations of vulnerability, such as during the current COVID-19 pandemic. We implemented this methodology to train our nursing students on other clinical situations, and they expressed a high level of satisfaction and positive perceptions about this innovative proposal [ 42 , 43 ]. In this way, the purpose of this research is to explore the perceptions and opinions of third-year nursing students about the use of simulated video consultations to assist potential cases of GBV victims.…”

“…4 Students reported technical issues with virtual learning and lack of technical skill learning with high fidelity simulation. 6 Students had expressed a negative attitude towards e-learning. 10 The most common obstacles faced by nursing students were lack of infrastructure and technology, followed by technical support and non-availability of instructor online.…”

“…5 Education plays a vital role in preparing nursing students to work well and remain resilient during challenging situations including pandemic. 6 Certain students will readily accept e-learning due to its flexibility, whereas certain others will resist it due to their lack of computer literacy or infrastructure. 7 Students prefer face to face training over virtual learning, 8 and also some of them had a negative attitude towards e-learning.…”

“…O caso clínico utilizado na simulação em vídeo, particularmente em momentos como o da pandemia, devido ao fechamento de universidades, mostra-se como uma opção de ensino de simulação de alta fidelidade. Estudo mostra que consultas de vídeo simuladas possibilitam o treinamento na modalidade de atenção à saúde para enfrentar os desafios emergentes nos serviços de saúde (Jiménez-Rodríguez, & Arrogante, 2020).…”
