Simultaneous determination of 19 constituents in Cimicifugae Rhizoma by HPLC–DAD and screening for antioxidants through DPPH free radical scavenging assay

Abstract: Cimicifugae Rhizoma (sheng ma) is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine, which has been demonstrated to possess anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic activities. In the present study, a simple and efficient HPLC-DAD (high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection) method was developed and validated for simultaneous quantification of 19 chemical components (including 16 phenolic acids, one coumarin and two alkaloids) in Cimicifugae Rhizoma. The result indicated that this me… Show more

“…The data by Nuntanakorn et al (2007) also indicate contents at or less than 1% in several Actaea species. Similarly, contents of about or less than 0.1% of the dry weight have been determined by Niu et al (2019) in various Actaea species. Since the amounts of the hydroxycinnamic acids in plant material is rather restricted and only few plant species are known to produce these fukinolic and cimicifugic acids, biological activities requiring higher concentrations of these compounds do not appear to be promising to be exploited in near future.…”

“…The increase of phenolic content was positively correlated with antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity of 2-feruloyl piscidic acid (IC 50 = 9.33 μM) and 2-isoferuloyl piscidic acid (IC 50 = 15.62 μM) was evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging activity test and the content of phenolic acid was positively correlated with antioxidant activity [ 86 ]. Phenolic hydroxyl group of the benzene ring and a highly conjugated side chain in the opposite position benefited to the delocalization and stability of the phenoxy group in the whole molecule, which played a strong antioxidant capacity [ 87 ].…”

“…Actaea cimicifuga L. is a common herbal remedy documented in editions of the pharmacopoeia of China. The dried roots of cimicifuga, known as Cimicifuga heracleifolia Kom., have been vastly utilized as the source of Chinese herbal medicine Sheng Ma in terms of its antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative effects (Niu et al, 2019). To evaluate the efficacy of Cimicifuga Rhizoma extract (CRE) on asthma, the mice (Lim et al, 2021;Pang et al, 2021) were administrated CRE orally at 30 and 100 mg/kg.…”
