Simultaneous measurement of temperature and refractive index based on a spherical structure cascaded with thin-core fiber

Abstract: A novel fiber-optic sensor for simultaneous measurement of temperature and refractive index (RI) has been proposed. The sensor consists of a structure of lead-in single-mode fiber (SMF)spherical structure-middle section SMF-thin-core fiber-lead-out SMF. The spherical structure acts as optical coupler, and excites the cladding modes. The extinction ratio of the transmission spectra can reach up to 20 dB. The experimental results indicate that the temperature sensitivities at interference dip1, dip2 and dip3 are… Show more

“…More and more novel structures are used in optical MZI sensors, such as core offset fusion [1], twisting [2], coating [3], etching [4], and tapering [5][6][7]. Various parameters can be measured by optical sensors, such as temperature [8], humidity [9], refractive index [10][11][12], liquid level [13], strain [14], and so on.…”

“…Optical fiber refractive index (RI) sensors are used in biological fields, medicine and environment [1][2][3]. So far, lots of fiber optic RI sensors have been reported in the literature, such as Mach-Zehnder (MZIs) [4][5][6], Fiber Grating [7], Fabry-Pérot (FPIs) [8], Sagnac [9] and multi-mode interferometer [10][11][12]. Among them, Quan [8] prepared an open-cavity FPI by splicing a section of the fused silica fiber tube between photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and single mode fiber (SMF), an ultra-high sensitivity of 30,899 nm/RIU is obtained.…”
