Silica gel (SG) is one of common adsorbent on solid phase extraction for preconcentration. Due to the low selectivity and effectiveness of adsorption to metal ions, SG should be modified. The SG was modified with d-glycine (Si-Gly) using 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane and glutaraldehyde as a crosslinker. Capability of Si-Gly as adsorbent for cadmium ions (Cd) was investigated using batch adsorption. The result was proved by infrared spectra. The optimum condition of Cd adsorption by the Si-Gly was obtained at pH 5, with 0.3 g of adsorbent and 11 minutes of contact time. The percentage of Cd adsorption at the optimum condition by the Si-Gly (99.34%) which is greater than the SG (89.03%). The maximum adsorption capacity of the Si-Gly is 9.77 mg/g, obtained at 400 mg/L. The Cd(II) adsorption on the SG and the Si-Gly follow the Langmuir isotherm equation.

Cadmium (Cd) is considered one of the most hazardous heavy metals. Therefore, it is important to detect Cd. A polyclonal antibody that recognizes Cd-ethylenediamine-N, N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid complex was prepared via the injection of BALB/c mice with Cd-2-(4-aminobenzyl)-diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid-keyhole limpet hemocyanin. A simple, inexpensive, and reliable indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) based on the polyclonal antibody was developed for determination of Cd. The assay was specific to Cd with an IC 50 value of 2.042 μg mL −1 and the detection limit of 0.0135 μg mL −1 . Cross-reactivities (CRs) with Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ , Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , Fe 2+ , and Ni 2+ were below 0.001% except for Hg 2+ with a CR less than 6%. The recoveries from deionized water were from 92.2% to 116.0%. Results indicated that the ELISA based on the polyclonal antibody would be very promising analytical tools for rapid and sensitive determination of metal ions in the environment.

The main purpose of the present study is sorption/preconcentration of trace amounts of cadmium using a magnetic activated carbon nanocomposite (MAC) as an adsorbent in various water samples using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). The advantages of this method include the elimination of organic solvent and easy separation of magnetic nanocomposites from the bulk solution by applying a magnet without any preliminary centrifugation and filtration steps. Initially, MAC was prepared by a sonochemical approach and characterized by FT-IR and TEM. Cadmium ions from 100 mL sample solution were then adsorbed on the prepared sorbent by batch mode at pH 7. After sedimentation of MAC, quantitative desorption occurs using 0.5 mL of 0.5 mol L À1 HCl. The effects of various parameters on the solid-phase extraction procedure efficiency including pH, sample volume, equilibrium time, type and concentration of eluent have been thoroughly investigated and optimized. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the detection limit (LOD) based on three times the standard deviation of the blank signals (n ¼ 8) was 4 ng L À1 . The relative standard deviation (RSD) resulting from the analysis of five replicate solutions containing 100 ng L À1 Cd(II) was 3.5%. The effect of potentially interfering ions on the percent recovery of cadmium ions was also studied. The accuracy of the method was verified using the analysis of a certified reference material. The proposed method was successfully applied to determine Cd(II) ions in aqueous real solutions.
