“…Polymeric cocrystalline forms are quite common for several regular and stereoregular polymers, such as, for example, isotactic21–23 and syndiotactic polystyrene (s‐PS),24–40 syndiotactic poly‐ p ‐methyl‐styrene,41–47 syndiotactic poly‐ m ‐methyl‐styrene,48, 49 syndiotactic poly‐ p ‐chloro‐styrene,50 syndiotactic poly‐ p ‐fluoro‐styrene,51 polyethyleneoxide,52–55 poly(muconic acid),56, 57 polyoxacyclobutane,58 poly(vinylidene fluoride),59, 60 syndiotactic polymethylmethacrylate,61–63 isotactic poly‐4‐methyl‐1‐pentene,64 or poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene ether) (PPO) 65–68…”

“…For instance, the methylene chloride guest is completely removed after few hours of air drying at room temperature. PPO cocrystalline forms with less volatile guests, such as decahydronaphthalene,68 tetrahydronaphthalene,68 or α‐pinene,66–68 are instead extremely stable and can be also obtained as single crystals 66, 67…”

“…In order to evaluate the degree of ordering of the samples in study a method was worked out (for the swollen PPO in its wet and dried state) allowing an estimation of ordering of the studied samples in relation to the original polymer sample, the degree of ordering of which was taken to be zero. The possibility of this assumption is confirmed by comparison of the X-ray diffraction pattern obtained for the powdered original PPO with t h a t published for the melted amorphous polymer [4]. Basing on the papers by KRIMM [16], WAKELIN [I81 and STATTON [I91 concerning the relationships between X-ray scattering and ordering as well as the method of determination the crystallinity index we calculated the degree of ordering 01 in a way approximate to the correlation method a t the absence of 100",(o crystalline standard.…”

“…It is known that PPO does not crystallize on annealing [4] because of the steric hindrances due to methyl groups while crystallization from solution occurs comparatively easily. Hitherto the following substances among others were used as liquid solvents or vapours or swelling agents: a-pinen [l], tetralin [iJ, tetrachloroethylene [6], butanon-2 [8, 91, chloro-form [lo] and decalin [ l l -1 3 1 in the recent works carried out in our laboratory.…”

“…1 -3 The results of the studies indicate that the structure of PPO single crystals depends on the solvent used for the crystallization and the subsequent drying procedures. Barrales-Rienda and Fatou 2 have shown that the relatively sharp diffraction maxima obtained in the W AXS pattern of PPO single crystals in the presence of a-pinene solvent become very broad and ill defined when the crystals are thoroughly dried. It is generally accepted that solvent molecules incorporate into the PPO crystal lattice.…”
