Polymeric ''cocrystalline forms,'' that is, structures were a polymeric host and a low-molecular-mass guest are cocrystallized, were early recognized, and in many cases also well characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. However, only in the last two decades cocrystalline forms have received attention in material science, due to the ability (of few of them) to maintain an ordered polymer host structure even after guest removal, thus leading to the formation of ''nanoporous-crystalline forms,'' for which many applications in the fields of molecular separation and sensors have been proposed. Moreover, in the last decade, an accurate control of the orientation of the polymer cocrystalline phases has been achieved, thus leading to a control of the orientation of the guest molecules, not only in the crystalline phase but also in macroscopic films. In addition, on the basis of this orientation control, in the last few years, cocrystalline films where active molecules are present as guests of polymer cocrystalline phases have been proposed for optical, magnetic and electric applications. In the last few years, it has been also discovered that polymer cocrystallization, when induced by nonracemic guest molecules, can produce stable chiral optical films. “…In order to evaluate the degree of ordering of the samples in study a method was worked out (for the swollen PPO in its wet and dried state) allowing an estimation of ordering of the studied samples in relation to the original polymer sample, the degree of ordering of which was taken to be zero. The possibility of this assumption is confirmed by comparison of the X-ray diffraction pattern obtained for the powdered original PPO with t h a t published for the melted amorphous polymer [4]. The system PPO/decalin was invastigated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction method. The polymer was used in i t s powder form. The experimental conditions were chosen to obtain maximum swelling of samples. I t was observed that ordering changes were taking place in a relatively short period of time after swelliiig. The degree of ordering was calculated for the swollen and dried samples. The observed relationships allowed conclusion concerning the influence of the swelling agent and conditions on the morphological changes in the studied system. “…1 -3 The results of the studies indicate that the structure of PPO single crystals depends on the solvent used for the crystallization and the subsequent drying procedures. Barrales-Rienda and Fatou 2 have shown that the relatively sharp diffraction maxima obtained in the W AXS pattern of PPO single crystals in the presence of a-pinene solvent become very broad and ill defined when the crystals are thoroughly dried. A sample of poly(2,6-dimethylphenylene oxide) (PPO) has been crystallized by exposure to 2-butanone (MEK) vapor. This sample has been investigated by wide and small angle x-ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and light-scattering techniques. The W AXS and DSC experiments reveal a maximum crystallinity of about 30%. The SAXS, analyzed according to the linear paracrystal model of Hosemann, indicates a high degree of order in the superlattice with an average crystal lamellar thickness of 38 A. Extensive peak broadening occurs in the W AXS curve arising from crystal lattice distortions or defects. These distortions or defects most probably are a consequence of the removal of solvent molecules from the lattice during the drying process. The light-scattering studies show a rodlike morphology apparently made up of fibrous bundles. The exact nature of the structures responsible for the observed light-scattering patterns cannot be conclusively demonstrated.
