Situated Encounters with Socially Engaged Art in Community-based Design

Abstract: With the increased relevance of digital technologies in civil life comes the challenge of how to design research for citizen engagement. Drawing from three reflexive case studies presenting socially engaged arts (SEA) projects, we describe how, as artists, collaborators and researchers, we engaged in socially inclusive community-based projects. We argue that our roles required us to be both flexible and to adopt critical openness in practices of collaborative social facilitation. We conclude with insights to i… Show more

“…As described in [11], it is extremely important for researchers to be mindful of how their conduct in professional relationships reflects upon their credibility. But, based on the premise within ECD to form an empathetic, trusting relationship with another, to find ways in which we should be able to feel and sense another's experience, we find ourselves questioning the extent to which it is possible to retain these objective and professional boundaries, and still achieve the aims of ECD [6]. Is it possible to have "strong feelings between self and other" [42, pg.…”

“…There is a need for establishing meaningful relationships and outcomes when designing with vulnerable communities [41]. Clarke et al call for design researchers to account for being socially engaged with participants and to value relationships built with participants [12]. When engaging with rural communities partaking in social practices, such as sharing of food supports the building of relationships [6].…”

“…Empathy: We drew on design literature that highlighted the importance of empathy in building trust and relationships with participants [11,33,45]. We dedicated engagements to empathetically listening [12] to the community's grievances and exploring how we may respond to them. Grievances that were surfaced throughout the study were equally explored and discussed.…”

“…More situated design responses for socially engaged design and innovation with specific communities (such as Clarke et al 2016) have however responded more holistically to precarities of existence in very particular ways. This includes design for sustainable financial services for rural farmers in Myanmar to support poverty reduction (Aung Din 2017), support for an understanding of the circulation and appreciation of creative cultures under threat of disappearance in Taiwan (Bardzell, Bardzell and Ng 2017), and design for community fire preparedness to support coordinated local responses during bush-fires in Australia (Akama and Ivanka 2010).…”
