Size Dependence of Energy Required for Cassava Grating

Abstract: An investigation was conducted into the energy required for grating cassava tubers of varying sizes. The tuberous roots of cassava that naturally occur in lengths of between 15 and 100 cm were cut and separated into groups of five different sizes (343.2mm, 228.8mm, 171.6mm, 85.8mm and 42.9mm). Equal masses of 10kg of these size categories were respectively grated down to a particle size of 1.5mm, with a grating machine powered by a 5.4hp diesel engine. A tachometer was used to measure the speed of rotation of … Show more

“…Okonkwo et al () obtained throughput capacity of 11.5 kg/min when evaluating the performance of a single barrel cassava grating machine on selected fresh and stored cassava species. Igoni and Fubara‐Manuel () obtained an average grating capacity of 107.4 kg/hr when grating 343 mm length of cassava tuber at 2700 rpm when investigating the size dependence of energy required for cassava grating. Moreso, thie variation in the throughput could be due to the size and age of the tuber, feed rate, grating speed, method of enabling contact of the cassava tubers with the grating surface and design configuration of the grater surface.…”

“…Proses ini dapat dilakukan secara manual atau menggunakan mesin, tergantung pada kapasitas keluaran yang dibutuhkan (Sajeev et al 2012). Pemarutan merupakan aktivitas pengecilan ukuran, yang menyebabkan kerusakan dinding sel dari umbi singkong menjadi partikel yang lebih kecil (Igoni et al 2016). Mekanisme yang umumnya dipakai untuk proses pemarutan ada dua macam.…”
