Sleepiness in sleepwalking and sleep terrors: a higher sleep pressure?

Abstract: Daytime sleepiness in patients with SW/ST is not the consequence of disturbed sleep but is associated with a specific polygraphic phenotype (rapid sleep onset, long sleep time, lower numbers of awakenings on N3) that is suggestive of a higher sleep pressure that may contribute to incomplete arousal from N3.

“…2,6,19,[21][22][23] Furthermore, SWS fragmentation was significantly higher in patients with DOAs than in controls as indicated by the SWSFI values. Compared with controls, patients with DOAs showed significant SWS alterations, with higher SWS fragmentation and higher proportion of slow/mixed arousal EEG patterns in SWS.…”

“…These features are typical of sleep recovery after sleep deprivation, and were previously reported to be major priming factors for SW or ST episodes in predisposed patients. 2,6,19,[21][22][23] Furthermore, SWS fragmentation was significantly higher in patients with DOAs than in controls as indicated by the SWSFI values. 13 These results are in line with other studies showing SWS instability in patients with DOAs, based on visual (ie, cyclic alternating pattern [CAP]) or spectral analysis assessment.…”

“…Die Tagesschläfrigkeit scheint somit ein eigenständiges Symptom der NREM-Parasomnie zu sein. In neuropsychologischen Untersuchungen konnten darüber hinaus Einschränkungen des visuospatialen Arbeitsgedächtnisses und der selektiven visuellen Aufmerksamkeit gefunden werden, dem gegenüber ließen sich keine Defizite in exekutiven Funktionen oder dem verbalen Gedächtnis finden [4,13,21].…”
