Small scale temporal patterns of recruitment and hatching of Atlantic horse mackerel (L.) at a nearshore reef area

Abstract: Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus, Linnaeus, 1758) is a highly exploited species, common throughout the North‐East Atlantic. As a pelagic‐neritic fish it typically occurs over the shelf from the surface to 200 m deep on sandy bottoms. Most research has focused on distributions of adults or early life stages (eggs and larvae) of this species in offshore waters and only a few studies have reported the occurrence of early stages near the coast. However, these nearshore environments might be important f… Show more

“…Although most studies use two weeks as standard immersion time to sample fish recruits (for example Luzier & Wilson Jr., 2004;Caselle et al, 2010;Klein et al, 2018;Ottman et al, 2017Ottman et al, , 2018Ottman et al, , 2019, some studies performed daily sampling (Valles et al, 2006) to more than two months of immersion time (Shima et al, 2012). This variation of sampling intervals often obeys the ecological and biological characteristics inherent to the species something already noted in literature (Ammann, 2004;Vallès et al, 2006).…”

“…The recruitment patern occurring in these months is likely influenced by the annual upwelling event in the respective area (Utama et al, 2017). According to Klein et al (2018), the recruitment pattern revealed a strong relationship with the upwelling.…”

“…Only two of the MPAs in mainland Portugal have no-take zones defined, namely Arrábida and Sudoeste Alentejano and Costa Vicentina [4]. MPAs along the Portuguese south-western coast have been well studied, e.g., [14][15][16][17][18], while information regarding the northern-central ones is still scarce.…”
