Smart grid lab research in Europe and beyond

Abstract: Summary In this survey, the objective is to identify current trends in the smart grid research by exploring the work carried out in numerous smart grid labs worldwide. For this purpose, a large number of smart grid labs are identified, and a short description of their activities is given. Fifty‐eight out of the 75 identified labs are located in Europe. Smart grid research is divided into categories, which represent popular topics of research in the field. The predominant category of research is identified to b… Show more

“…Tidal power generation is relatively predictable and fluctuates on the order of 1 week or 1 month. 15,17,26 Figure 16B shows the SOFC output as a backup power supply following the energy balance in Equation (12). Figure 16C shows the amount of energy stored in hydrogen carriers, according to the energy flow shown in Figure 15.…”

“…Sarangi et al 11 reviewed a hybrid AC/DC microgrid protection. Jansen et al 12 investigate a smart grid lab research in Europe and beyond, and Jahanshahi et al 13 studied the relevant economic criteria. Research and development of tidal power generation technology are energy field accompanied by growth rapid in recent years.…”

“…For remote locations, isolated microgrids are very important for extending energy coverage and have been the subject of research in recent years. 3 To properly coordinate a microgrid, whether isolated or connected, it is necessary to use an energy management system (EMS). 4,5 The EMS is a control device responsible for determining the best scheduling of conventional dispatchable distributed generators (CEDG), energy storage systems (ESS), and sometimes schedulable loads (DIS) in response to variations in non-schedulable loads (PL) and power produced by alternative energy distributed generators (AEDG).…”

“…With the worldwide energy crisis and environmental deterioration, researchers are making efforts to investigate new ways to extract energy from renewable sources . To make full use of renewable sources and achieve multiple energy complementation, microgrid systems have received great attention and become a significant research topic . Microgrid systems, featured by distributed energy resources, consumption, and storage, are designed to significantly enhance the self‐sustainability of future electric distribution grids and have been widely used in islands and remote areas …”
