Snowmass White Paper: the Double Copy and its Applications

Abstract: The double copy is, in essence, a map between scattering amplitudes in a broad variety of familiar field and string theories. In addition to the mathematically rich intrinsic structure, it underlies a multitude of active research directions and has a range of interesting applications in quantum, classical and effective field theories, including broad topics such as string theory, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. This Snowmass white paper provides a brief introduction to the double copy, its appli… Show more

“…Additionally, while this metric does not approach Minkowski space in the asymptotic limit, it nonetheless has vanishing Riemann curvature at spatial infinity. 15 Analogous to [19], the zeroth and single copy fields for the Kerr-Newman-Taub-NUT solution readily follow from applying the rescalings (V.20) and (V.21), together with rescaling (ẽ, g) → ℓ −2 (ẽ, g), to the gauge fields of the general PD solution (V.13) and (V.14). Precisely, upon rescaling S (1) and f…”

“…This result was anticipated by the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relation demonstrating any closed string amplitude may be cast as a linear sum of factors, each of which is a product of two open string amplitudes, at tree level [4]. The discovery of the double copy resulted in powerful new techniques for computing amplitudes in (super)gravity at tree-level and beyond [3,[5][6][7][8], offering new insights into the fundamental nature of perturbative quantum gravity, and has numerous applications, particularly in gravitational wave physics [9][10][11][12] (see [13][14][15] for comprehensive reviews).…”

“…where the CHY integrand I n depends on the physical theories [2,3,10,11]. Not only do CHY formulae provide a new, universal representation of scattering amplitudes in various theories, but they also offer insights into new relations between them; among others, Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relations [12,13] and Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) double copy (based on color-kinematics duality) for gauge theories and gravity [14][15][16] become manifest in CHY [1,3], which have been extended to relations among various effective field theories [11,17].…”

“…Although the Weyl double copy [43] is more general, the two procedures give identical results, as they should, when both are applicable. There is a growing literature on the subject providing various examples and generalities (see [69][70][71] for reviews), and we now have a pretty good understanding of its origins and limitations thanks to results from twistor theory [72][73][74].…”
