Science and technology studies is famous for questioning conceptual and material boundaries by following controversies that cut across them. However, it has recently been argued that in research involving online platforms (Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter, etc.), there are also more practical boundaries to negotiate that are created by the variable availability, visibility, and structuring of data. In this paper, I highlight a potential tension between our inclination toward following controversies and “following the medium” and suggest that sometimes following controversies might involve going “against platforms” as well as with them. I will illustrate this dilemma through an analysis of the controversy over the coverage of the Fukushima disaster on English language Wikipedia, which concerns boundaries between expert and lay knowledge but also the social and technical functioning of Wikipedia itself. For this reason, I show that following the controversy might mean making use of less formatted and less obvious data than Wikipedia normally provides. While this is not an argument against the use of automated digital research tools such as scrapers, I suggest that both quantitative and qualitative researchers need to be more willing to tweak their approaches based on the specificities of the case.

Although "privacy" and "commons" might on first impression seem conceptually orthogonal or even opposed, a deeper analysis suggests there are insights to be gained from studying information privacy as a question of knowledge commons governance. Privacy often is taken to connote constraint and control over information, while commons often connotes openness and sharing. Neither of these stereotypes, however, are accurate reflections. A more nuanced perspective reveals that sharing and constraint are two sides of the same coin, acting as complements, both in social situations ordinarily conceived in privacy terms and in institutions aimed at creative production through knowledge sharing. Privacy is not simply a matter of constraint, but is more usefully understood, as Helen Nissenbaum has argued, as a matter of "appropriate flow of personal information" for specific social contexts (2009, p. 127).When defined as such, it becomes apparent both that privacy is not secrecy and that privacy often involves knowledge sharing. Indeed, true secrecy, in which information is completely unshared (Friedrich, 1971;Neitzke, 2007), is a rarity.

ResumenEl objetivo de este trabajo es contribuir al estudio del campo de la comunicación en movimientos sociales de la era de la Web social. La investigación plantea como hipótesis que han aparecido nuevas estrategias comunicativas en los "cibermovimientos sociales" para influir en el cambio social. Propone una clasificación en la que se distinguen transformaciones en el ámbito de la comunicación interpersonal (las redes informales) y la comunicación públi-ca (los repertorios de acción colectiva). Los resultados se apoyan en una exhaus \tiva revisión bibliográfica y en la observación directa virtual, especialmente de los movimientos sociales de indignación global de 2011.
