Background Past studies have found that sodium bicarbonate ingestion prior to exercise has a performance-enhancing effect on high-intensity exercise. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of continuous sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 ) supplementation on anaerobic performance during six weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Methods Twenty healthy college-age male participants were randomly assigned to either the HCO 3 − group (SB) or the placebo group (PL), with 10 subjects in each group. Both groups completed 6 weeks (3 days/week) of HIIT with the SB ingesting an orange-flavored solution containing 15 g xylitol and 0.2 g HCO 3 − /kg body mass during each training day, and PL ingesting a similar beverage that was HCO 3 − -free. This study separated 6 weeks of training into two stages with different training intensities, with the first 3 weeks at a lower intensity than the second 3 weeks. Blood samples to measure serum HCO 3 − were obtained 5 min before and 30 min after the following HIIT training sessions: Week 1, training session 1; week 3, training session 3; week 6, training session 3. Three 30s Wingate tests (WAnT) were conducted before, in the middle, and after the training and the supplementation interventions, with peak power, mean power, and fatigue index obtained during WAnT, and blood lactate and heart rate obtained after WAnT. Results Our findings indicate the following: 1) Serum HCO 3 − level of SB was significantly higher than PL ( p < 0.05) both before and after each HIIT; 2) Relative peak power in WAnT was significantly higher in the SB group after 6 weeks ( p < 0.01); 3) Lactate clearance rate and the lactate clearance velocity after 10 min of WAnT were both significantly higher in SB in the post-test (p < 0.01); 4) Heart rate recovery rate at 10 min after WAnT in both SB and PL after 6 weeks were significantly improved (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively), resulting in no difference between groups on these measures. Conclusions These data suggest that supplementation of HCO 3 − at the level of 0.2 g/kg body mass before HIIT training enhances the effect of HIIT on anaerobic performance, and improves the blood lactate clearance rate and the blood lactate clearance velocity following anaerobic exercise.

SARS-CoV-2 causing COVID-19 has appeared as an ongoing global public crisis, growing with geometric progression and has caused huge devastation till date majorly because of lack of targeted therapeutic agents like vaccines. SARS-Cov-2 entrance into the host cells is reliant on acidic pH. Thus, in the current clinical emergency there is a pressing need to look forward for adjunct therapies which could counter the acidic pH, so as to restrain the viral entry and its subsequent reproduction in the host cells. Therefore, the current review attempted to explore the possibility to use sodium bicarbonate as an alternative lysosomotropic agent based on the reported literature owing to its anti-flu properties and widespread use during 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. The suggestions put forward in the current review article based on the careful use of sodium bicarbonate could probably help to restrain SARS-CoV-2 infection. Rezumat COVID-19 a generat o criză de sănătate publică globală cu consecințe uriașe până în prezent, în principal din cauza lipsei agenților terapeutici specifici. Pătrunderea SARS-Cov-2 în celulele gazdă depinde de pH-ul acid. Astfel, în situația clinică actuală este nevoie de terapii adjuvante care ar putea contracara pH-ul acid, pentru a limita penetrarea virusului la nivel celular. Prin urmare, studiul de față explorează posibilitatea utilizării bicarbonatului de sodiu ca agent lizozomotrop alternativ, pe baza datelor referitoare la gripa spaniolă din 1918. Sugestiile prezentate în actualul articol, privind utilizarea bicarbonatului de sodiu, ar putea ajuta contribui la limitarea infecțiilor cu SARS-CoV-2.

Palavras-chave: Bicarbonato de Sódio; análise físico-química; qualidade.Quality control is a set of activities performed to ensure that the product is not delivered to the consumer without first meeting the defined specifications. This study evaluated the physicochemical quality of sodium bicarbonate, in powdered pharmaceutical form, dispensed in pharmacies in the city of São Luís-MA. Analyzes were performed according to the methods described in the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia 5th edition. Ten samples from the same batch were used from each manufacturer, and three different manufacturers were analyzed, performing identification, purity, weight and assay assays. The samples met pharmacopeic specifications in the identification and purity assays. In the tests for weight determination, the samples analyzed from the three manufacturers fulfill the test with a value found on the average of the results of 100% of the mass in relation to the declared weight, indicating homogeneity in the filling and the supply of the product in the informed quantity. In the assay, the three manufacturers: A (99.73%), B (100.16%) and C (99.94%) were in accordance with the specification of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia 5th edition. The results show little variation between the units and the average, observed in statistical analysis, suggesting homogeneity between the samples analyzed in the study. It was found that the samples analyzed from the three manufacturers complied with the physicochemical quality tests applied in the study, suggesting to comply with the recommended quality standards.
