Soil Management Effects on Soil Water Erosion and Runoff in Central Syria—A Comparative Evaluation of General Linear Model and Random Forest Regression

Abstract: The Mediterranean part of Syria is affected by soil water erosion due to poor land management. Within this context, the main aim of this research was to track soil erosion and runoff after each rainy storm between September 2013 and April 2014 (rainy season), on two slopes with different gradients (4.7%; 10.3%), under three soil cover types (SCTs): bare soil (BS), metal sieve cover (MC), and strip cropping (SC), in Central Syria. Two statistical multivariate models, the general linear model (GLM), and the rand… Show more

“…Soil erosion is recognized as a global environmental problem, which severely damages infrastructure, causes land degradation and water pollution, and threatens the safety of human production and life [1][2][3]. In the past few decades, many scholars have made many efforts to study the process and mechanism of soil erosion, establish many soil erosion prediction models and try to control soil erosion [4][5][6][7].…”

“…As the world seeks to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals related to food, health, water and climate, soils are under enormous pressure [1,2]. Soil erosion has been identified as a limiting factor in the development of a sustainable, global and social economy [3,4]. Soil erosion occurred in areas where intense interactions among strata at the surface of land and environmental factors interact including water, wind, freeze-thaw, gravity, etc.…”

“…Soil erosion has become one of the most critical environmental problems influencing sustainable development and agricultural productive capacity [1,2]. It comprises a series of complex physical processes including detachment, entrainment, transport, and the deposition of soil particles as the result of one or more natural or anthropogenic erosive forces [3].…”
