Solitary neurofibroma of the breast

Abstract: Neurofibromas are slow-growing, painless, benign nerve-sheath tumors. They occur most commonly in the dermis and subcutis and are rarely found in the breast. We report a rare case of a solitary neurofibroma of the breast in a 61-year-old asymptomatic woman.

“…As the growth of neuro broma is slow, and can occur at any age, has no sexual preference, and usually has no pain, numbness or other discomfort symptoms (15), its diagnosis is mainly depending on the result of imaging and microscopy. The differential diagnosis includes nodular fasciitis, myxoma, neuro brosarcoma and adult rhabdomyoma, especially schwannoma (16,17).…”

“…Unfortunately, the MRI, which is the most sensitive imaging method for soft tissue, manifests neuro broma may similar to those of schwannoma. They usually show low or equal signal compared with muscle on T 1 -weighted image(T1WI), high signal on T 2 -weighted image(T2WI), and can change with the enhancement of contrast agent, especially when the tumor has mucoid mechanism, it can show no or slight enhancement (8,15). It is worth noting that compared with schwannoma, neuro broma often lacks complete capsule, which may help us to distinguish common cases by MRI images (6).…”

“…Intramammary peripheral nerve sheath tumorsincluding NF and schwannomas-are uncommon. 1,2 Intramammary NF typically occur as an asymptomatic and solitary lesion, 3 although multiple mainly cutaneous-based ones can ensue in neurofibromatosis type 1. 4 The macroscopic and microscopic appearances of NF are largely similar in all locations, although its myxoid variant has been described in the breast as elsewhere.…”
