“…The alterations found in vein tumours of maize leaves infected with MRDV are similar to those found in other virus-infected plants (GEROLA et al 1965a(GEROLA et al , 1965b. Some of these alterations are probably due to an osmotic imbalance, which causes first the swelling of the chloroplast grana discs, and then the rupture of the chloroplast membrane, with consequent plastidial degeneration.…”

“…The alteration of chloroplast in the mosaic leaf caused in the other virus-host systems seem to be also essentially the same in its development as that obtained in this experiments, so far as the symptom is similar. But when the mosaic symptom is severe one such as observed in tobacco leaves infected systemically with CMV-Y strain, a considerable number of abnormal chloroplasts seem to advance from the inhibition of lamellae development to the disintegration of lamellae, as shown in the picture by GEROLA et al (1965). The degree of the structural alterations in chloroplasts seem to be a clear reflection of the degree of the external symptom.…”

“…The tonoplast might play an active role in this process, since it is often seen proliferating and is generally more electron-dense than normal. However, such modifications of the tonoplast, which are found also in other virus infections ( GEROLA et al 1965( GEROLA et al , 1966, might also represent degenerative changes caused by the virus. They can not be ascribed to simple fixation artifacts, because they were never observed in control preparations.…”
