In recent decades, electronic books have revolutionized the publishing world. In this sense, an area of application is education, where electronic books can be used as educational resources to implement learning strategies about content and in eLearning environments. For this, it is necessary to introduce interactive elements in the electronic books that turn the reader into an active actor in the reading process. However, ebooks have a limitation regarding their creation process. In this sense, the tools can be user-oriented or programmer-oriented. The former are intuitive to use and have user-friendly interfaces, but they offer a reduced number of functionalities to add to books. The second are aimed at programmers, allowing for the implementation of any functionality, but limiting the number of content creators who can use them. The main motivation of this work is to propose an intermediate solution that offers a wide number of functionalities while not requiring deep programming knowledge to use them. In this sense, the solution of this article is novel since it proposes the use of extensible markup language (XML) documents to specify the structure of the electronic book in such a way that its processing will lead to the electronic book.

“…With the designed learning activities and curricular contents, eBooks will be created with suitable ePUB3 functions embedded for supporting the actions of these learning activities (e.g., initiating/reacting their actions) and the deliveries of these curricular contents. In general, many ePUB3 functions can be considerably embedded in the eBooks: (1) as presented in our previous work (Lin, et al, 2017), supportive functions can be embedded in the textual contents such as pictures, videos, referential links, guided readings, automatic repetitions, exercises, assignments, tests, and questionnaires; and (2) for supporting dynamic behaviours, more enhanced functions can also be embedded such as communications among individuals (e.g., group-based discussions or information sharing among the teacher and students) and action/access tracking of pages/embedded functions (e.g., tracking of actions/accesses on textual pages or functions embedded in these pages).…”

Using digital and internet technologies in recent years has not only provided more education opportunities outside classrooms, but has also gained many attentions as a new theme for prospective learners to acquire knowledge in a more convenient way. In such a new paradigm of the so called e-Learning, many efforts have been made to build web-based learning systems that provide controllable processes of learning activities with desired curricular contents. From the learning perspective, this means that desired contents are delivered with spectacular ways to catch the attention of the learners or to enhance their comprehension on these contents. For this need, we present in this paper a flip blended learning approach for designing, lecturing, and assessing academic courses with ePUB3 eBooks used in learning activities for delivering desired curricular contents. Further, for justifying its validity, the approach employs also an analysis about the effects of using our ePUB3 eBook-based flip blended learning model in academic course learning. For implementation, the approach is applied for the design and instruction of an 'Object-Oriented Concepts' course for freshman students at a Department of Information Management.

In e-Learning, the flip blended learning model is commonly used to provide students with learning contents inside/outside classrooms. It encourages students to preview learning contents at their own pace outside classrooms before the class lecture. Thereafter, student-centric actions are taken inside classrooms in the lecture with instructions/helps from the teacher. An important issue about its success is the effectiveness review of a class lecture to explore its possible weaknesses. In addition, for an ePUB3 eBook-based flip blended learning model, ePUB3 eBooks are used in the model for students to access learning contents during the class lecture. The embedded ePUB3 track and test functions in these eBooks can be applied for tracking students' in-lecture accesses on these eBooks and examining their post-lecture learning outcomes. As such, the teacher can review the effectiveness of the class lecture to explore its possible weaknesses. In this paper, we explore such a study on the effectiveness of class lectures via ePUB3 track and test functions in an ePUB3 eBook-based flip blended learning model. For illustration, this study is applied to an academic 'Script Writing' course and respective discussions are presented for showing its usefulness.
