Sonography of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Abstract: Objective. The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of sonographic manifestations of various gastrointestinal diseases. Methods. Patients were scanned with an HDI 3000 or HDI 5000 system (Philips Medical Systems, Bothell, WA) with both a 2-to 5-MHz curvilinear transducer and a 5-to 12-MHz linear transducer. The patients were asked to fast from the previous night. For accurate visualization of the stomach, a cup of water was given to patients thought to have stomach or upper gastrointestinal d… Show more

“…The sonographic appearance of the small bowel depends on the degree of distension. The bowel may be collapsed, containing only a small amount of mucus, or it may be distended, containing fluid or gas 7 . Proper identification of the jejunum and ileum is difficult because of the lack of a fixed landmark, but it is possible by using topographic criteria, the frequency of valvulae conniventes, and activities of peristalsis.…”

“…Localized fluid between two bowel loops, caused by local exudation from the inflamed bowel, may be seen (Figure 16). 7 Sonography shows ulceration within the thickened bowel wall in only a few cases because of associated bowel spasms (Figure 17). 21 …”

“…Based on the foregoing, it is assumed that the raceway stability is greatly susceptible to the flux of coke that flows into the raceway, that is, the heat flow ratio at tuyere. 20) Consequently, it is assumed that under all coke operation with a high heat flow ratio at tuyere and under intensive PC injection with a low heat flow ratio at tuyere, factors that define the raceway stability would differ.…”

“…In contrast to the United States, sonography is used as the first‐line imaging modality in some European countries 14 , 15 and most developing countries 16 . With the recent technological advances of the sonographic machines that are available today, the ever‐improving resolution, and the ability to visualize the various characteristics of echo architecture that accompany spreading transmural inflammation, sonography is emerging as a premier modality for the imaging of the gastrointestinal tract 13 …”
