Sonography of the knee joint

Abstract: KEYWORDSUltrasound; Knee joint; Power Doppler; Synovial.Abstract The aim of this article is to review the sonographic appearances of common disorders involving the knee joint. Ultrasound is a sensitive method for diagnosis of tendon injuries. Injured ligaments appear swollen with mixed echogenicity. Meniscal injuries and muscle tears can be easily diagnosed. Ultrasound shows synovial thickening and effusion in inflammatory arthropathy and erosions of the articular surface in degenerative arthritis. It can be u… Show more

“…Other studies added that the disc was surrounded by hard tissues of the condyle and temporal bone. Therefore, significant difference exists in the acoustic properties of the disc and its surrounding structures, resulting in a considerable reflection of ultrasound waves and formation of sharp image [11][12][13][14].…”

“…Applications of higher frequency ultrasound probe (18 MHz) and advancements in ultrasound probe technology continue; more detailed imaging and improvement in tissue differentiation will improve the image quality and may contribute to a better diagnosis [11][12][13][14]. Application of three-dimensional ultrasound examinations [31] increases the diagnostic validity of ultrasound in diagnosis of sideway as well as the anterior disc displacement and improves the relationship of the articular disc with bony condyles.…”

“…Ultrasound is becoming more popular in the evaluation of different musculoskeletal abnormalities such as different rheumatic disease, soft tissue lesions, and joints [10][11][12][13][14]. Few studies discuss the role of ultrasound in knee joint [15][16][17] as well as ultrasound findings in patients with knee osteoarthritis [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25].…”
