Sources of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Land Reclamation Development in Indonesia

Abstract: Land reclamation activities can, directly and indirectly, impact the environment. Examples of direct effects include alterations in coastal geomorphology, variations in the chemical content of water and changes in biological composition along the littoral zone. The indirect impacts can involve geological changes and increase vulnerability to natural disasters. Reclamation processes also result in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from vehicle and machinery fuel use and through the release of carbon stored in vege… Show more

“…This discussion defines the activities and equipment utilised by the land reclamation project that emit emissions including various heavy machinery and several quarries sites. This chapter has been published as a case study entitled: "Sources of greenhouse gas emissions from land reclamation development in Indonesia" in Case Studies in the Environment (Slamet, Dargusch, Aziz, & Wadley, 2018). Chapter 5 presents an impact assessment of land reclamation in mangrove areas at both the quarry and the displacement site from a carbon management perspective.…”

“…Quarries are scattered from 55 km to 320 km from the site (Figure 5.2). Data compiled from the Environmental Impact Analysis (EIA) of the reclaimed islands indicate that the volume of material within 100 km is 105.7 million m 3 (Slamet et al, 2018). The supply areas are located in the neighbouring provinces of Jakarta, namely West Java, Banten and Lampung.…”
