Space monitoring of pollution of the Russian sector of the Azov-Black Sea basin in 2008

Abstract: Technology of space monitoring of the state of water bodies and results of its application for studying the Azov-Black Sea basin in 2008 are considered. Based on the processing of more than 1000 satellite images and ground-based station data, basic characteristic features of the marine environmental pollution are determined which are connected with suspension dispersion, phytoplankton and algae growth, ship dumping of oil products (more than 62 oil patches were revealed), etc. The influence of dynamic structur… Show more

“…Under conditions of a wide shelf, moving surface intrusion of desalinated coastal waters can generate intense internal waves [6]. The surface manifestations of internal waves in the Black Sea were studied in [7], which described a new revealed mechanism for the formation of internal waves in tideless seaswave generation by non-stationary front associated with the passage of a cold eddy. One of the causes for the occurrence of internal waves is the presence of vertical wake turbulence; the structure of waves generated under such conditions and their surface manifestations were studied in [8,9].…”

“…After the development of satellite systems with sufficiently high spatial resolution and possibility of providing daily data for any area of observation, it has become possible to develop technologies for a marine environment monitoring. Operational satellite monitoring makes it possible to map the dynamic characteristics and parameters of water pollution, to determine the types and scales of pollution, to track its migration routes, to observe the mechanisms of water self-purification (Bedritskii et al, 2009). Sometimes it is possible to obtain some quantitative characteristics of pollution (e.g., the area of pollution and its change rate).…”
