Space syntax as a determinant of spatial orientation perception

Abstract: This paper shows space syntax as a useful tool for evaluating buildings as well as for research on environmental perception. With this methodology, the spatial organization of a building was measured, obtaining a quantitative description of the relationships among the spaces within the building. This measurement is given in terms of how closely each space of the building is connected with the others. We analysed the relationship between the level of integration of each space and the perception of the settings … Show more

“…A high IV shows that space integrates very strikingly with the system, thus suggesting a public space. In contrast, the space is more private when the IV value is close to 0 (Ortega- Andeane et al, 2005).…”

“…But also on a smaller scale, within the indoor environment, the degree of freedom differs: in corridors, people go more or less straight following the medial axis, while in open spaces, people move more freely. Furthermore, it is widely accepted in the literature [83,84] that these open spaces provide visual access to the building which facilitates the legibility of the building [85] and orientation [86]. In contrast, this freedom of movement induces difficulties in modeling open spaces and modeling the routing in these spaces, which have been outlined and examined in a number of studies (e.g., [87,88]).…”

“…La syntaxe spatiale en tant qu'approche morphologique, se distingue dans sa démarche par le rapprochement entre le social et le spatial (Ortega-Andeane et al, 2007). Donc, notre objectif par cette technique et de trouver un modèle d'identification des rapports métrique entre les relevés des transformations urbaines, le système Wayfinding du mouvement piéton et les propriétés syntaxiques de la morphologique urbaines.…”
