Spatial Characteristics and Regional Transmission Analysis of PM2.5 Pollution in Northeast China, 2016–2020

Abstract: Northeast China is an essential industrial development base in China and the regional air quality is severely affected by PM2.5 pollution. In this paper, spatial autocorrelation, trajectory clustering, hotspot analysis, PSCF and CWT analysis are used to explore the spatial pollution characteristics of PM2.5 and determine the atmospheric regional transmission pattern for 40 cities in Northeast China from 2016 to 2020. Analysis of PM2.5 concentration characteristics in the northeast indicates that the annual ave… Show more

“…where C ij is the average weighted concentration in the ijth cell, l is the index of trajectory, M is the total number of trajectories, C l is the concentration observed on the arrival of trajectory l, and τ ijl is the time spent in the ijth cell by trajectory l. An arbitrary weighting function W ij (Equation ( 2)) was applied to the CWT O 3 concentrations to minimize uncertainty associated with fewer trajectories n ij [64][65][66][67].…”

“…The air quality gradually improved from January to June. It should be mentioned that the PM 2.5 values in the northeast rose much higher in April 2020 than those in March due to the widespread, high-intensity open-air straw burning, which was intense in some cities in the northeast in mid-April ( Fang et al, 2021 ). Open-air burning caused a significant deterioration in the regional air quality, and compared to May, the PM 2.5 concentrations slightly improved in most parts of the country in June.…”
