Spatial mode switchable, wavelength tunable erbium doped fiber laser incorporating a spatial light modulator

Abstract: We present a 2-mode group, switchable spatial mode erbium doped fiber laser incorporating a spatial light modulator. The laser wavelength can be tuned using an intra-cavity wavelength selective filter and provides >10dB extinction ratio between LP 01 /LP 11 modes.OCIS codes: (060.3510) Lasers, fiber; (060.2410) Fibers, erbium; (060.0060) Fiber optics and optical communications. IntroductionFiber lasers [1] offer excellent beam quality, reliability, compactness and high photon conversion efficiency and have bee… Show more

“…In previous MDM systems, linearly polarized Laguerre-Gaussian modes have been generated using fiber Bragg gratings lasers [40][41][42], long-period grating lasers [43], separate SLMs [44][45][46][47]7] and photonic crystal fiber [48].…”

“…Moreover, further generation of cylindrical vector beams and vortex beams based on HOMs has also been verified [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] , which finds a tremendous range of applications, including plasmon excitation [10] , optical tweezers [11] , and electron acceleration [12] . So far, several routines to achieve HOMs have been confirmed, such as specially designed fibers [13,14] , lateral offset splicing [15] , long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) [16][17][18] , few-mode fiber Bragg gratings (FMFBGs) [19][20][21][22] , mode-selective couplers (MSCs) [4,[23][24][25][26][27] , spatial light modulators [28][29][30][31][32] , active polarization control [33,34] , and acoustically induced fiber gratings (AIFGs) [35][36][37][38] .…”

“…Cylindrical vector beams (CVBs) with radial or azimuthal polarization have attracted significant attention recently [1,2], and have already found various applications, such as optical tweezers [3,4], single molecule imaging [5], optical trapping [6], optical sensing [7], material processing [8] and so on. A variety of methods have been reported to generate CVBs with unique polarization properties, such as the use of spatial light modulators (SLMs) [9,10], polarization components [11,12], few-mode fiber Bragg gratings (FM-FBGs) [13,14], etc. Among these, the generation of CVBs based on FM-FBG features compact structure, robust mode confinement and excellent flexibility.…”
