Spatial working memory in children with high-functioning autism: Intact configural processing but impaired capacity.

Abstract: Visual attention and visual working memory exert severe capacity limitations on cognitive processing. Impairments in both functions may exacerbate the social and communication deficits seen in children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study characterizes spatial working memory and visual attention in school-age children with high-functioning autism. Children with ASD, and age, gender, and IQ-matched typically developing (TD) children performed 2 tasks: a spatial working memory task and an attentive… Show more

“…Deficits in working memory tasks and executive function are implicated in ASD patients (Baltruschat et al, 2011;Geurts et al, 2004;Happe et al, 2006), although there is still considerable controversy in the field as to whether currently used tests of cognitive control and flexibility are actually detecting cognitive inflexibility, due to the other cognitive processes involved in the tests utilized (Geurts et al, 2009). The nature of working memory deficits in ASDs is still not clearly defined, but some of the studies which have detected working memory deficits have done so using tasks that depend upon spatial working memory (Kas et al, 2014;Kercood et al, 2014), particularly visuospatial working memory (Jiang et al, 2014;Landa and Goldberg, 2005;Steele et al, 2007;Williams et al, 2005). Deficits in working memory in ASD are also specific to increased working memory load, as increasing task complexity results in poorer performance (Kercood et al, 2014;Steele et al, 2007).…”
