Spatio-temporal differentiation of residential land for coastal town: A case study of Dalian Jinshitan

Abstract: Based on SPOT5 satellite remote sensing images and land use data in five time phases covering the period 1988-2012, the distribution characteristics, spatial differentiation processes, and driving mechanisms affecting the residential land of the Jinshitan Tourist Resort were studied. The work included a combination of GIS technology, adoption of the differentiation index D, and the multi-group differentiation-measure model D (m). The results provided a basis for the following conclusions: 1) From 1988 to 2012,… Show more

“…In the context of socio-economic transition, Nantong's residential development is also closely linked to the dynamics of the land market and local governments' land planning policies [43]. In the early period of China's market-oriented reform [44], economic growth and people's desire to attain better living conditions were the driving force behind investment in housing estates [45]. Since 2003, Nantong has experienced a boom in its housing estate market [3] and an unprecedented scale of housing development in newly established zones.…”

“…In recent years, with the increasing availability of remote sensing data, investigating urban development patterns through the integration of different sources of remote sensing information has become a popular avenue of urbanization research. For example, studies of the intensity and mode of construction land expansion in developed and developing countries using multiple-source remote sensing data and the Defense Meteorological Satellites Program/ Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) night-time light data revealed the effect of policy factors at different economic development levels and of heterogeneous regional landscapes on urbanization [12][13][14]. Following the implementation of the Chinese national policy of reform and opening-up in the 1980s, the spatiotemporal changes of Chinese cities and their driving factors have attracted increasing attention from researchers [15][16][17][18][19].…”
