Spread of Clonally Related Escherichia coli Strains Harboring an IncA/C 1 Plasmid Encoding IMP-8 and Its Recruitment into an Unrelated MCR-1-Containing Isolate

Abstract: Ten IMP-8-producing isolates were recovered from surveillance cultures of a neonatal intensive care unit; eight of the isolates were clonally related. A 168.2-kb plasmid was fully sequenced, and it corresponded to the recently described IncA/C1-ST13 plasmid. This plasmid was detected in all isolates, even in those that were not clonally related. One unrelated isolate was also resistant to colistin and positive for This marker was located in a 62.7-kb IncI2 plasmid, which was also fully sequenced.

“… 9 A bla IMP-8 -harboring plasmid IncA/C1-ST13 was described in E. coli , and the carbapenemase gene was associated with integron class I flanked by two IS 26 elements. 10 Other metallo-β-lactamases (MBL), such as bla VIM-2 and bla VIM-11 , were associated with integrons In 883 , In 885 , In 346 , In 900 in E. cloacae, 11 and bla VIM-16 associated with class I integron in Serratia marcescens . 12 Two genetically related K. pneumoniae isolates were recovered from the same patient, one isolate harboring bla OXA-163 and the other bla OXA-247 .…”

“…To date, all mcr-1 plasmids from human isolates in Argentina were characterized as a ca. 60kb IncI2 plasmid ( 14 , 28 , 31 ). Similarly, in the present study, a high proportion (85.4%) of IncI2 plasmids was detected.…”

“…IMP-8 is the type most frequently described in Enterobacterales worldwide, mainly in Asian countries such as Taiwan, where several outbreaks have been reported ( Wang et al, 2015 ; Matsumura et al, 2017 ). However, nosocomial outbreaks of IMP-8-producing Enterobacterales have also occurred in other geographical regions, including those mediated by K. oxytoca in Spain ( Vergara-López et al, 2013 ) and E. coli in Argentina ( Elena et al, 2018 ); a specific search in PubMed did not provide any previous description of IMP-8 in S. marcescens . Conversely, IMP-22 has rarely been described, occurring mainly in Spain in K. pneumoniae and E. coli isolates ( Miró et al, 2013 ; Ortega et al, 2016 ).…”
