Abstract:Two cases of primary squamous cell carcinoma associated with a thyroid cyst in the thyroid are described. The majority of squamous cell carcinomas reported so far have had some degree of co-existing adenocarcinoma, while the cases presented in this report had no glandular component at all. The histogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma is not clear, but at present, it is believed that most cases arise from the follicular epithelium. In our cases, in spite of an intensive examination of serially sectioned specimen… Show more
“…of the esophagus or the pharynx as well as larynx, are usually treated by radiotherapy [57]. Though, some reports declared squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid to be radioresistant [3], [34]. Our data show, that disease free survival greater 12 months was only achieved in seven patients with an early tumor stage without lymph node involvement, complete surgical resection in combination with additional radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy.…”

“…Focal metaplastic squamous differentiation has been reported to occur in 40 per cent of papillary and mixed papillary/ follicular carcinomas (Segal et al, 1984). In fact, most cases of squamous carcinoma of the thyroid in the literature have showed some degree of adenocarcinomatous differentiation (Harada et al, 1989). Furthermore, local invasion from surrounding structures and/or metastasis is far more common than primary squamous carcinoma and this mandates a thorough search for a primary tumour elsewhere (Segal et al, 1984;Korovin et al, 1989).…”
We report a well-documented case of fatal thyroid cancer with histopathological characteristics of primary squamous carcinoma. A possible primary tumour elsewhere was excluded. The possible histogenesis of this unusual tumour and the therapy of choice are briefly discussed.
“…To date, approximately 130 cases of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland have been reported in the English literature, with the majority being case reports 7–34 . Thus, clinicopathological features of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland are not well defined.…”
Squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid has aggressive clinical behaviour and characteristic CK expression pattern. p53 over-expression in these tumours was associated with tumour differentiation.
