Stability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation: A model intercomparison

Abstract: [1] The evolution of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) in 30 models of varying complexity is examined under four distinct Representative Concentration Pathways. The models include 25 Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Models (AOGCMs) or Earth System Models (ESMs) that submitted simulations in support of the 5th phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) and 5 Earth System Models of Intermediate Complexity (EMICs). While none of the models incorporated the additional effect… Show more

“…Our analysis based on the long-term TG data and the AMOC-SLR relationship indicates that the 2009-2010 event is very unusual. In addition to internal variability, anthropogenic forcing could be another impact factor, as most climate models project a weakening of the AMOC during the twenty-first century in response to the increase in the atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations 40 . Continuing observations of the AMOC is essential to confirm these modelling results.…”

“…However, 10 of the 18 values are between 0 Sv and -0.05 Sv, implying that these models are close to the boundary between mono-and bi-stability. For the models that overlap with (Weaver et al 2012 Fig. 1a).…”
