Standardization of leaf age for radical scavenging activity in Terminalia arjuna

Abstract: Abstract:Terminalia arjuna is one of the many such plant that used in indigenous system of medicine for curing different diseases. For effective formulation of herbal drug selection of proper age of the plant is imperative. In the present study, the T. arjuna plant (leaves) was collected from the Botanical garden of Saurashtra University. The leaves were grouped in to various size and growth analysis was performed. Each extract homogenized in methanol and was used for chlorophyll estimation and antioxidant act… Show more

“…All data tabulated for L, L 2 , W, W 2 , water content (WC) and dry weight (DW). Each individual leaf/leaflets was scanned and saved as .bmp files then proceed for leaf area measurement as per the software standard protocol (Kuvad et al, 2014;Tatmiya et al, 2014). The present method of leaf area measurement is very simple, rapid as software (LAM) is very efficient and user friendly (http://btm.gujarat.gov.in/btm/bitvirtual-init.…”

“…Physiologically active compounds may vary with age and conditions of the leaves; therefore, there must be some guide lines for the collection of the materials. Leaf area of the plants not only determines the photosynthetic capacity but can be use as a morphological marker for collection of medicinally important materials (Kuvad et al, 2014;Tatmiya et al, 2014). Leaf area of the plants is correlated with leaf dimensions like length and width and linear models are developed as nondestructive method.…”

“…Leaves of many plants have been used as a source of medicine. Age of the plants, which are selected for producing herbal formulations, is needed to be considered for the higher yield of the desired active compounds, which may influence the efficacy of the medicine [8,9]. Growth in the terms of fresh and dry weights, water content and leaf area of each individual leaf were measured from both the plants studied (Figure : 1, 2).…”

“…The difference in fresh and dry weight is considered as the water content. Each individual leaf/leaflets was scanned and saved in .bmp file format and then leaf area measurement was calculated as per the software's standard protocol [8,9]. The present method of leaf area measurement is very simple, rapid as software (LAM) is very efficient and user friendly [31].…”
