Standardization of mobile phone positioning for 3G systems

Abstract: Finding the location of the mobile phone is one of the important features of the 3G mobile communication system. Many valuable locationbased services can be enabled by this new feature. Telecommunication managers and engineers are often puzzled by location terminologies and techniques as well as how to implement them, since location systems are not natural evolution from past generations of telecommunication systems. In this paper, we discuss briefly why locating mobile phone becomes a hot topic and what techn… Show more

“…In geometrical triangulation, researchers assume that the measured noise is additive and the NLOS error is a large positive bias where the measured ranges are greater than the acceptable values [2]. These techniques require three wireless links to be established simultaneously with three access points.…”

“…Recently, mobile location estimation has attracted significant attention for various types of applications. These applications have stimulated research on location-finding techniques [1,2,3,4]. Location-finding refers to the process of obtaining the location information of a mobile station (MS) with respect to a set of reference positions within a predefined space [5].…”

“…The timing-difference concept is also used for the localisation of mobile stations, as shown in [21,22], whereas the author of [23] analysed the accuracy of cellular mobile station location estimation. Standardisation of mobile phone positioning for 3G systems has been proposed in [24], whereas, in [25], different techniques, including TDOA, are analysed to track and localise mobile phones. In [26], the authors addressed a joint source location and propagation speed estimation using TDOA; the approach is necessary in scenarios, such as underwater acoustic localisation, where the signal velocity is unknown.…”
