Stellaria media (L.) Vill.- A plant with immense therapeutic potentials: phytochemistry and pharmacology

Abstract: Stellaria media Vill. is a representative of Caryophyllaceae family. The plant is widely dispersed all over the world and has been used as therapeutic substance since time immemorial. This review is aimed at exploring the chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of S. media. The findings revealed important secondary metabolites such as flavonoid, oligosaccharide stellariose, anthraquinone derivatives, fatty acid, steroid saponins and phenolic compounds. These bioactive metabolites displayed diverse… Show more

“…The peak from around 0.450 V can be attributed to ascorbic acid oxidation, leading to a content of 0.47 ± 0.003 µg/mL. The value of AEAC was 26 ± 0.02 µg/mL, which indicates an important antioxidant capacity of SM extract, in accordance with other studies employing spectrophotometric methods [14][15][16][17].…”

“… 32 In the literature, there are some experimental data suggesting similar antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Stellaria media , which can be associated with the improvement of certain cardiac parameters in our present study. 35 Therefore, we tested the in vitro antioxidant capacity of Stellaria media tea, and we found a low antioxidant activity. This phenomenon was observed by another study too, where the antioxidant activity of the aqueous and methanolic extract was weak.…”
