Stomatal and non-stomatal limitations of photosynthesis under water stress in field-grown grapevines

Abstract: Long-term induced water stress in field-grown grapevine leads to a progressive decline of stomatal conductance, accompanied by a decrease in CO 2 assimilation (40%). The apparent quantum yield also decreases (59%), which may reflect a relative increase in alternative processes for electron consumption. There is also a shift to non-stomatal regulation, as judged from significant depletions (37%) in maximum photosynthesis rate at saturating CO 2 related to limited ribulose biphosphate (RuBP) regeneration, wherea… Show more

“…2). However, as the photosynthetic saturation point declined with drought intensity [6] the same PPFD became probably saturating at a Ψ m lower than −2.5 MPa, producing the increase of NPQ in N. dombeyi and the concomitant decrease in Fv/Fm, ∆F/Fm and qP.…”

“…So far, numerous papers have been published on different mechanisms of plant acclimation to soil drought and on their role in the selection of cultivars or genotypes resistant to soil water deficit (Flexas et al 1999(Flexas et al , 2006Escalona et al 2000;Flexas and Medrano 2002;Hura et al 2007aHura et al , 2009aHura et al , b, c, 2011Hura et al , 2012Grzesiak et al 2010;Rollins et al 2013;Nolf et al 2014;Borrell et al 2014). However, very few studies investigated the problem of adverse functional changes brought about by the rehydration stage (Oliver et al 1998;Hura et al 2009a).…”

“…This effect may prevent the metabolic inhibition of CO 2 assimilation that otherwise would occur if stress under field conditions was allowed to develop extensively (e.g. Escalona et al 1999;Maroco et al 2002). The aim of the present work was to analyse the effects of PRD on photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and water use efficiency (both in the short and long term) in field-grown grapevines.…”
