“…Li et al (2020) further pointed out that the CF is strongly affected by the amount of straw used, and when compared with no STR treatment, the CF did not increase until field application of one-third of the STR and then increased as straw application was further increased. Bai et al (2021), under the same natural conditions in semiarid areas of Northwest China, showed that STR increased GHG emissions, but the CF decreased by 45-55% due to the strong acceleration of soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation. Therefore, the effects of STR on the CF observed by different researchers in different regions are inconsistent.…”

“…This can be a good option to alternative plastic film and worth futher study for agricultural sustainable development and environmental protection. In addition, although the study and some others similar studies accomplished over a 2-years period 49 51 , some studies are more than 2 years, such as 4 or 6 years 1 , 20 , to reduce the effect of weather variability from year to year on crop growth, yield, irrigation and energy budget, carbon footprint 1 , 20 . Thus, this study needs to be conducted over a long period of time for further refine the results.…”

“…Although the price of urea is low, the cost of topdressing is high, and the high cost but labor saving feature of the NC treatment might be a tradeoff in terms of practical production [54,55]. Our previous study showed that the NC treatment obtained higher net return than the NU treatment [56,57]. Therefore, the NC treatment might be a better N application type, which increased root distribution in the deep soil layer and improved the use of deep soil water in the arid and semi-arid climate of the Loess Plateau.…”
