Stress and telomere shortening among central Indian conservation refugees

Abstract: Research links psychosocial stress to premature telomere shortening and accelerated human aging; however, this association has only been demonstrated in so-called "WEIRD" societies (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic), where stress is typically lower and life expectancies longer. By contrast, we examine stress and telomere shortening in a non-Western setting among a highly stressed population with overall lower life expectancies: poor indigenous people-the Sahariya-who were displaced (betw… Show more

“…These results suggest that CTRA responses to early life social adversity may represent a relatively broad human potential that can be observed in non-WEIRD populations. Our findings echo a recent study in which a molecular association established in WEIRD populations was replicated in a non-WEIRD population: specifically, the association of stressful exposures and telomere shortening among Indian conservation refugees (39). The present data underscore the importance of recognizing PTSD in non-WEIRD cultural groups because PTSD may herald physical and mental health problems throughout the life course.…”

“…First, the majority of studies examining ELS effects in TL and other biological mediators are from North American or European upper income countries (Zahran et al, 2015). It could limit the generalization to distinct socioeconomic countries (Henrich, Heine, & Norenzayan, 2010).…”

“…The stated thermal cycling profile was carried out in 96-well plates compatible with a BioRad CFX96/C1000 Thermal Cycling System. Upon completion of data collection, CFX manager Software 3.1 was used to generate standard curves for the telomere signal and the albumin signal [37]. Relative telomere length is reported as a number reflecting the ratio between the telomere and albumin signals, i.e.…”
