Structure Determination of a New Juvenile Hormone from a Heteropteran Insect

Abstract: The structure of the juvenile hormone (JH) in the suborder Heteroptera, order Hemiptera, has been known for a very long time to be different from the JH of other orders, but the structure has been a matter of controversy. The structure was first elucidated by an unprecedented approach involving the screening of a JH molecular library. The novel Heteroptera-specific JH (JHSB3) is a new category of JH that is featured by the skipped bisepoxide structure.

“…S5), and the Y252W substitution lowered JH III binding to 21.5% (Table 1). Interestingly, a closely related bug species, Plautia stali, possesses a skipped bisepoxide type of JH (25), suggesting that the tryptophan residue might reflect the structural difference of the bug JH.…”

“…The ethyl-branched JHs, JH I, and JH II are the predominant JHs in lepidopteran insects and are also synthesized via the same pathway. In contrast, the heteropteran and higher dipteran insects produce the unique JHs that are featured by bisepoxide structures, known as JH III skipped bisepoxide (JHSB 3 ) (Kotaki et al 2009) and JH III bisepoxide (JHB 3 ) (Richard et al 1989;Bendena et al 2011), respectively. Therefore, these insects might have some particular JH biosynthesis enzymes compared with other insects.…”
