“…As assumed by Bertaut, Buisson, Durif, Mareschal, Montmory & Quezel-Ambrunaz (1965) and Abrahams & Bernstein (1967), and in agreement with various well known structures, Mn(1) (MnO6 octahedra) is certainly present in the Mn 4÷ oxidation state and Mn(2) (MnOs pyramids) is in the d 4 configuration (Mn 3 +).…”

“…It is noteworthy that the observed cell parameters in our powder patterns are significantly different from those reported in the literature, from single crystal samples, included also in the same Table 2. It is possible that the way of preparation of these crystals (3,6), involving a Bi O flux (3) or manganese halides (6) could have led to small substitutional incorporation of strange atoms into the structure, thus modifying slightly the size of the cell.…”

“…The family of RMn 2 O 5 (R = rare earths) oxides was first described in the 1960s by Bertaut et al, [1,2] that already recognized the extraordinary flexibility of the structure with regard to the substitutions of both R and Mn atoms allowing, for instance, the preparation of RMnTiO 5 phases. Some RMn 2 O 5 materials have recently been revisited since they are among the few oxides that show a significant magneto-ferroelectric effect, [3][4][5][6][7] which implies a coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetic order in the system: the application of an external magnetic field leads to the appearance of an electrical polarization.…”
