Study of cytotoxic activity, podophyllotoxin, and deoxypodophyllotoxin content in selectedJuniperusspecies cultivated in Poland

Abstract: Context: The demand for podophyllotoxin and deoxypodophyllotoxin is still increasing and commercially exploitable sources are few and one of them, Podophyllum hexandrum Royle (Berberidaceae), is a ''critically endangered'' species. Objective: The first aim was to quantify the amount of podophyllotoxin and deoxypodophyllotoxin in 61 Juniperus (Cupressaceae) samples. Cytotoxic activity of podophyllotoxin and ethanolic leaf extracts of Juniperus scopulorum Sarg. ''Blue Pacific'' and Juniperus communis L. ''Depres… Show more

“…These differences may lead to different responsiveness of J.45 and HL60 in the cytotoxicity tests [ 36 ]. A similar tendency (higher toxicity in relation to the J45 than HL60 lines) was observed in earlier studies [ 37 ]. Literature data confirm our results, indicatind that J.45 cells are more sensitive to chemopreventive agents, such as anthocyanins, than HL60 cells.…”

“…In total, the present results exhibited significant consistency with previous reports on Juniperus plants. The content of podophyllotoxin is very high in Juniperus species and also has a good antitoxic effect . The hyperoside, amentoflavone, and formononetin are all well‐known human health antioxidants .…”
