Study of the synergistic effects of all-transretinoic acid and C-phycocyanin on the growth and apoptosis of A549 cells

Abstract: In the present study, we investigated the effects of the combination of all-transretinoic acid (ATRA) and natural nontoxic C-phycocyanin (C-PC) on the growth of A549 lung cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, the anticancer mechanism of the drug combination was revealed. Results showed both C-PC and ATRA could inhibit the growth of A549 cells in vivo. The combination of ATRA+C-PC could yield a higher inhibition rate. C-PC exerted a major effect on the proliferation of human embryo lung cells, but ATR… Show more

“…Non-small cell lung cancer, an extremely aggressive form of cancer with few effective therapeutic options, has attracted that attention of many investigators. Previous studies have suggested that phycocyanin exerts an inhibitory effect on A549 cells, a type of NSCLC cell line [ 21 , 22 , 23 ]. In this study, we demonstrated that phycocyanin inhibits the growth of H1299, H460, and LTEP-A2 NSCLC cell lines.…”

“…The inhibiting effect of phycocyanin on NSCLC has been reported in several studies. Li et al revealed that phycocyanin could inhibit the growth of NSCLC A549 cells in vivo and in vitro, which also has a synergistic anti-tumor effect with all-trans retinoic acid [ 21 , 22 ]. Bingula et al reported that phycocyanin and betaine have a synergistic inhibiting effect on the viability of A549 cells [ 23 ].…”

“…ATRA is often used to treat skin diseases and can also induce tumor cell differentiation and apoptosis. Li et al [ 90 , 91 ] investigated the in vitro and in vivo antitumor effect of the combination of C-PC and ATRA on A549 lung cancer cells. Their results showed that such a combination is better than that of single drug treatment, the dosage of ATRA is greatly reduced, and there were no obvious toxic side effects.…”

“…Li et al [30] have reported that C-PC is an ideal cancer prevention drug as it may inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vivo and in vitro . Thus, C-PC may become a good substitute for highly toxic conventional chemotherapeutic anticancer drugs in the future [31]. …”
