Study on biodegradable plastic from sago with addition of glycerol and serbitor

Abstract: The synthesis of biodegradable plastic film was carried out by using sago starch as main raw material, water as solvent, glycerol and sorbitol as plasticizer. Sago was selected as raw material for plastics not only because it’s cheap and easy to obtain, but also the utilization of sago is still very minimal. The research aimed to make the environmental friendly plastic, and to be better than the conventional ones. Parameters plasticizer of the research were glycerol and sorbitol by 7%, 8% and 9% weight of tota… Show more

“…Therefore, the mass ratio of glycerol to starch was chosen to be 0.5 to maintain the optimized conditions, considering the production cost. Glycerol is a commonly used plasticizer that can improve the flexibility of the mulch material by forming hydrogen bonds with starch molecules through hydroxyl groups, thus, changing the molecular structure of the starch [ 24 ].…”

“…Therefore, the mass ratio of glycerol to starch was chosen to be 0.5 to maintain the optimized conditions, considering the production cost. Glycerol is a commonly used plasticizer that can improve the flexibility of the mulch material by 6 of 14 forming hydrogen bonds with starch molecules through hydroxyl groups, thus, changing the molecular structure of the starch [24]. As shown in Figure 2a, the elongation at break and tensile strength of the mulch film exhibited a trend of increasing and then decreasing with the addition of sodium alginate.…”

“…Starch can be obtained from tubers, seeds, nuts, and the trunks of sago trees. Several studies have used cassava starch, sago starch, a mixture of durian seed starch and sago starch, jackfruit seed starch, and other starch sources as the main ingredients for bioplastics (Wahyuningtyas and Suryanto, 2017;Amni et al, 2019).…”

“…In Malaysia, sago has been developed as a material for liquid sugar, seasoning (monosodium glutamate), noodle, caramel, sago pearls, cracker, and even adhesive industries. Sago starch serves as the acetone-butanol-ethanol substrate [2]. It is also used as the basic material of plastic [3].…”
