Insect attack of produce in storage is a major challenge in postharvest handling and contributes to food waste and loss. Attempts to use synthetic chemicals to control this have generated other health and environmental problems. This study aimed to investigate the potential of pyrolyzed cocoa pod husk as a biopesticide (liquid Smoke (LS)) to protect cocoa beans against storage pests. The study was set up in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments (10%; 20%; 50%; 100 % concentrations of LS and 0 %as control). These were applied to the outer surface of mini jute sacks containing cocoa beans. A GCMS analysis of the LS detected 20 compounds. A repellence test of LS showed a very strong repellence effect, repelling almost 90% of the insect population. The feeding deterrence index also caused a reduction in bean damage from 22% in control to 7.65% for 100% LS-treated beans. Weight loss was reduced from 2.13% in control to 0.11 % in the sample treated with 100% LS. The LS treatment did not cause any significant change in the FFA and pH content of the beans. The organoleptic test also proved that LS treatment did not cause any substantial change in the flavor and overall taste and aroma acceptability. Therefore, the liquid smoke can be used for protecting cocoa beans by spraying on the outer part of jute sacks containing beans.

Bio-oil, although rich in chemical species, is primarily used as fuel oil, due to its greater calorific power when compared to the biomass from which it is made. The incomplete understanding of how to explore its chemical potential as a source of value-added chemicals and, therefore, a supply of intermediary chemical species is due to the diverse composition of bio-oil. Being biomass-based, making it subject to composition changes, bio-oil is obtained via different processes, the two most common being fast pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction. Different methods result in different bio-oil compositions even from the same original biomass. Understanding which biomass source and process results in a particular chemical makeup is of interest to those concerned with the refinement or direct application in chemical reactions of bio-oil. This paper presents a summary of published bio-oil production methods, origin biomass, and the resulting composition.

Grains (cereals and legumes) are universal foods that provide calories, proteins, essential minerals and vitamins. They are essential to the nutrition of many including infants and children. Attack by insects and microorganisms, particularly fungi, during drying, storage and processing, affects the quality, safety and market value of grains. Fungal attacks before or during drying can be disastrous, the effect can persist throughout the supply chain. Postharvest grain losses pose challenges to food and nutritional security, public health, and many developing nations' economy. Postharvest storage structures and packaging materials are expected to extend the shelf life of the grains by protecting them from insects, microorganisms, environmental factors and making the microenvironment unfavorable for insect and microbial activities. Traditional storage and packaging materials are highly inefficient in this sense and are associated with quality degradation. Traditional storage and packaging materials commonly used by farmers, mostly in developing countries, include granary, crib, wooden box, gunny bag and polypropylene woven bag. Modern storage and packaging materials commonly used are metal silo and hermetic bags; they are effective but unfortunately cannot be afforded by most farmers in developing countries. The article reviewed postharvest storage management of cereals and legumes. Literature was gathered through a comprehensive literature review. The use of various traditional storage and packaging materials for grains was debated. Techniques for the prevention of postharvest losses were extensively discussed, emphasis was given to novel technology and the use of natural insecticides. Challenges associated with controlling postharvest losses were also summarised. In the end, research gaps were identified and recommendations were provided about minimizing grain contamination and postharvest losses.
