Supercompositeness from superstrings

Abstract: String Unified Models based on the k = 1 level of the Kac-Moody Algebra, predict the existence of "exotic" new states which carry fractional electric charges. We analyse the possibility of considering these "exotics" as preonic matter which can be used to form the families and the gauge group breaking higgs scalars. It is proposed that such a formation may occur provided that these states transform non-trivially under a non-Abelian gauge group with a relatively large rank in order to confine them at a sufficie… Show more

“…As recently suggested in Ref. [47], such states can in principle serve as "preons" which may bind together under the influence of hidden-sector gauge interactions in order to form effective adjoint Higgs representations. We shall discuss the appearance of fractionally charged string states in Sect.…”

“…It is the latter possibility where generation flow, as discussed in Section 3, can be important. 9 In practice, when determining the number of generations, one looks at the tree-level predictions. However, as discussed in Sections 2 and 3, the number of generations obtained this way may differ from the true number of chiral generations in the low-energy effective theory.…”
